Spain is a notoriously tough market for online gaming companies. In 2012 they brought in a new legislation, which required any online gaming site offering it’s service to Spanish customers to be regulated in Spain. This means passing their licensing process, being granted the license and then adhering to their regulations and high tax bills.
Although a nation of gaming lovers, with each Spanish player being estimated to spend twice as much as a UK based customer, the regulations and high tax make this market a struggle, that only the biggest and best online gaming sites can weather.
Since 2012, however, casino games have not been permitted in Spain, as they are not covered by the license. Many gaming companies are holding off on applying for a license until slots are regulated, or either applying for the license and ‘tiding over’ until slots are introduced. Luckily they don’t have much longer to wait.
Slots and online exchange betting are being added to the regulation as we speak, and should be ready to launch as early as Q1 in 2015! Netent has already stated that they’ll be heading into Spain, with CEO Per Eriksson confirming;
“We are currently looking into the application process for Spain as slots will be included at the end of the year, which is great for us as we don’t have any traffic coming from Spain right now.”
A number of known and loved Netent casinos are already live and operating in Spain such as 888 and I can be sure that 888, Netent and all the players in Spain will be looking forward to the launch of slot machines equally. As the regulation comes into place and online casinos begin to launch slots in Spain I think we can expect an influx of amazing promotions, bonuses and fun to be had all round.
