We’ve spoken about the Global Gaming Awards twice already this week, but they were just so jam packed with news, that we’ve got a 3rd success story for you! A host of Netent casinos (and Netent themselves) won awards in their categories, showing the world that Netent really is the name of the game.
888 Casino won Digital Operator of the Year and Netent were awarded Digital Innovator of the Year, both of which could not be more well deserved.
Today, we’re telling you about yet another Netent casino that cleaned up at the Global Gaming Awards 2014. Denise Coates, the founder and joint Chief Executive of the hugely successful Bet365, was awarded Executive of the Year. This is a groundbreaking development in gaming, not because it comes as a shock, on the contrary, Denise was absolutely the most deserving of this award, but because Denise was the only woman in the shortlist of contenders and she went on to win.
Even in this day and age, it can be hard to be a woman, in all aspects of life and that’s especially apparent in gaming. It’s still very much a ‘mans world’ although in the 10 years I’ve worked in the industry I have seen great changes. Still, Denise is a role model for professional women from all walks of life, working in all industries.
To earn a little extra money, whilst Denise was still at school, she began working part time within her families bookmaking company, Provincial Racing. Once she had finished school and left university she decided to train as an accountant, knowing that having a head for numbers is a great skill for any business man and woman. Once qualified she was given the opportunity of taking over the chain of book making shops and instantly made waves and increased profits noticeably, so much so in fact, that she was able to obtain a loan from a huge UK bank in order to buy a competitor in the market.
In 2000 Denise bought the domain that we all know and love as Bet365, whilst working out of a portakabin in a car park. She built the site, made her vision come to life and launched in 2001. The site was an instant success and Denise decided to focus her energies on it fully, selling her betting shops to a competitor for an outstanding £40 million, paying off all business debts and then some.
Bet365 has grown into one of the largest online gaming sites in the world and it’s great to see Denise rewarded for all her hard work. Congratulations to Denise Coates and Bet365, we can’t wait to see what you have in store over the next few years!
