“Dealer” – What does it mean?

“Dealer” – What does it mean?

Published on by James

We’ve spent a few weeks looking at some of the different key terms that you’ll need to know in order to get up to speed with gambling.

We’ve looked at ‘baccarat’, ‘chips’, and ‘roulette’, but this week we’re going to look at something equally as important (and much more ubiquitous): dealers.

Like chips, dealers are in nearly every single Table Game. So, getting to grips with dealers will help you with every aspect of your online gaming.

Let’s dive right in and take a look at dealers – and we don’t mean the sort that will sell you a used car!

History Of Dealers

Dealers have been around as long at gambling itself, because all games needed, in essence, someone to enforce the rules. However, the specifics of this have developed over time.

Today many dealers are also called croupiers, but originally these were two very different roles.

Croupiers were more like bankers, ‘spectators’ who would give other players a bankroll. During table games, croupiers would stand behind the players, giving them extra cash when they needed back up.

In this way, croupiers were an advantage that players had – extra money, more weight in table games.

Dealers, on the other hand, were usually just the player who was responsible for distributing the cards to the other players in the game.

The croupier role developed from this into the person who is responsible for collecting the winnings form the table at the end of the game, and no longer the bankroll for players.

The dealer still never collected the cash. Eventually, with the increase in popularity of casinos, in places like Nevada and Monte Carlo, the croupier and dealer roles merged.

The house needed a person to be in charge of everything at the tables, so now dealers both collected money and ran the games.

Training Dealers

Blackjack Live-Dealer on MobileTraining to be a dealer can take a very long time, and depending upon where you happen to train, the techniques may be a little different.

In North America, for example, dealers are first trained on blackjack. This is because it is easy to learn, but also because it costs the casino very little if the dealer makes a mistake. In Europe, however, dealers are most often started out on roulette.

This, however, is because the game is quite simple in its mechanics, but it also has a relatively complex betting system. Only the most well respected and long-term dealers are able to play on high-roller tables.

NetEnt live casino dealers have a three-week intensive training program, in the heart of their Malta-based operation.

During this time trainees will learn every aspect of table games, making them the best in the industry. In addition to this, they’re also trained to deal with unpleasant customers, difficult situations, and much more.

The Use Of Casino Dealers

Modern-day casinos use dealers on all of their major table games, they control everything that happens on the table, and as we’ve seen it takes a lot of skill and training to become one.

However, although dealers are used in on-land casinos for games like blackjack, poker, roulette and more, they’re also used in virtual casino games and live dealer games.

The virtual casino dealer is not really a virtual reproduction of a real dealer. Instead, virtual casino dealers are simply Random Number Generators, which are responsible for creating random card deals.

RNGs are (usually) pieces of code which are responsible for creating sequences of random numbers, which are no more predictable than random chance, like the roll of a dice.

The change of money is dealt with by the in-game cashier, so no ‘dealer’ is ever involved in the moving of cash.

In live casino games, the distribution of cards can either be done by the person, or by an RNG, it depends upon the game designer. The change of money is also dealt with by the casinos’ in-built cashier.

Now you know more about dealers and croupiers, it is probably worth you putting your knowledge to the test.

If you can’t make it to your local casino, then you can check out all the awesome NetEnt live dealer games and their virtual table games at these top online casinos below:
