Glastonbury 2017: NetEnt Rocks’ Jimi Hendrix Under the Spotlight

Published on by Adam

Onto our second NetEnt Rocks series review inspired by our Glastonbury/BGO sign up bonus, and up steps one of the greatest guitarists in musical history. It’s perhaps too controversial to actual class Jimi Hendrix as the greatest ever, particularly due to the difficulty people have in comparing genres. However, his legacy is in no doubt, with countless guitars sold around the world to both kids and adults who want to emulate those incredible riffs.

With such high esteem, NetEnt couldn’t overlook Jimi for their Rocks Trilogy angle – and he was released to the wider online casino gaming world a few months after its Guns N’ Roses video slot predecessor in April 2016.

Before we get to the slot game, though, a bit about the legend himself.

An Introduction to Jimi Hendrix

The Jimi Hendrix story isn’t quite as simple as the Guns N’ Roses rise to fame, with the Seattle-born musician first completing military service at the age of 19. However, dabbling in the R&B scene before subsequently moving to New York City failed to yield much success, leading Jimi to head across the pond.

Soon after his arrival in London, the Jimi Hendrix Experience band was formed and their debut Are You Experienced dropped to the world. After spending a grand total of 33 weeks in the charts (peaking at number 2 due to the small problem of competing with The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), Hendrix was finally in a position to demonstrate his abilities.

Follow-up Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland were recorded and released in quickfire fashion, before the group split in mid-1969. However, Hendrix was a worldwide star, going on to headline the famous Woodstock Music & Art Fair – with more than 400,000 people attending.

He has been noted as an influence to countless artists over the years, with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognition coming in the form of his Jimi Hendrix Experience band.

Jimi Hendrix Glastonbury Festival Trivia

Jimi Hendrix Glastonbury Festival Trivia

Sadly, Jimi Hendrix never got the chance to grace the Glastonbury stage as he died the day before the first ever festival was held. That fateful day was 18th September 1970, with Glastonbury Festival 1970, or Pilton Festival as it was known then, kicking off 24-hours larer with tickets priced at just £1 each!

The Kinks were part of the original headline acts (not too shabby for a first-time festival!), but unfortunately they had to pull out at the final hour. Tyrannosaurus Rex, later famous for their shortened T. Rex name, were the worthy replacements.

Becoming pretty much synonymous with the 1960s’ counterculture movements, the worldwide peace sign features as one of the game’s symbols – alongside guitars, flowers, old-school vinyl LPs and other interesting images.
