Player misses out on $100k jackpot, friend leaves with the cash

Sometimes, you come across a story that leaves you scratching your head while simultaneously feeling bad for the injured party in the situation. In this case, that would be Jan Flato, who recently lost out on a $100,000 jackpot because it was his friend, and not him, who pushed the button on the slot machine just prior to the win.
Confused? Yeah, so were we. Let’s take a look.
It all begins
Settled in the high roller room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Fort Lauderdale, Flato was having fun spinning the reels on a slot machine. That evening, Marina Medvedeva Navarro was with him. The two had known each other for two years and after another $50 spin, Flato invited Navarro to push the button on the machine, ostensibly for good luck.
Turns out, that spin was lucky and a $100,000 win rang up on the reels. But it wouldn’t be Flato who left with it that day.
He said, she said
Flato claims that because it was his money in the machine when it hit paydirt, the winnings ought to be his. Navarro disagrees, saying that there were some $400 of her own money in that machine at the time.
The casino sided with Navarro when CCTV footage showed her finger on the button before the machine paid out. The Miami Herald reports that she asked the casino security team to keep Flato away from her as she left with $50k in cash and a $50k cheque.
Flato, resident in Vegas, approached lawyers to take his case but was turned down. His decision to go public, he said, was to warn others so they wouldn’t suffer the same fate.
Why take the chance?
Land-based casinos are certainly a fun and exciting way to spend your time but if Flato’s story is anything to go by, there are some risks to playing with other people around, even the ones you already know and trust.
