What Do the Changes to Dutch Online Gaming Mean for Casino Players?

Published on 6 April 2017 by Adam

What Do the Changes to Dutch Online Gaming Mean for Casino Players? It’s been quite a rocky time for Dutch online casino players, as recent attempts by the government to thrash out an online gambling bill have left them unsure of where to play. Regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) managed to see the Remote Gambling Act passed through the Dutch Lower House last July to much fanfare, with expectations that regulation would be implemented early this year.

However, problems have surfaced with regards to the law’s content, leading to a long list of questions being drafted to the government by the Dutch Senate Committee for Security and Justice. While these have been answered, it seems not to the satisfaction of the Senate as further queries have been drawn up which could well delay licensing by another extended period of time.

Considering this legislation has history dating back many years already, this would be another cruel blow to online casino players’ hopes in Netherlands. Let’s take you through the current state of the Dutch Remote Gambling Bill.

What is the Dutch Remote Gambling Bill and Why is it Important?

The Dutch Remote Gambling Act has been a long time coming, but it would look to legally open the market to operators with the inclusion of a casino licensing system. At the moment, only a handful of websites located within the Netherlands are considered to be viable online gambling options for residents by the government.

Despite proposed legislation allowing overseas websites to join the party in future, this has been a seriously time-consuming process. The KSA has long insisted that the changes have drawn massive interest from a variety of parties, as Dutch casino is often heralded as a massive opportunity.

However, until some form of act is passed into law, the KSA continues to dish out huge fines to foreign websites who offer their services to Netherlands’ players.

What Do Dutch Gambling Authorities Consider to Be Illegal?

According to the KSA’s website, one of its main objectives is to counter what is seen as illegal offerings from unauthorised websites. Due to the sheer number of online gambling services currently online today, the criteria is incredibly far-reaching. Here are the 3 main aspects that the KSA is looking to tackle:

  1. Gambling websites made available on the .nl domain
  2. Gambling websites made available in the Dutch language
  3. Any Netherlands-intended gambling adverts on TV, radio or in print

As part of their attempts to minimise the success of foreign-based operators, the KSA has been issuing huge fines to iGaming companies that they deem to be flouting these rules.

What Can Dutch Online Casino Players Do?

Unfortunately, it’s quite difficult to say what online casino players in Holland can do. The Remote Gambling Bill drama has been rumbling on for far too long now, leaving gamers in a sticky situation when it comes to finding online gaming entertainment that’s competitive.

Authorities being slow to act isn’t just taking its toll in the Netherlands either, with Pennsylvania continuing to drag its heels despite a convincing report outlining PA iGaming’s potential.

Although we appreciate that it’s frustrating, we can’t really advise Dutch gamers on gambling outside of the government’s rules until some form of the Remote Gambling Act is passed into law.
